Building First Pro: Designing a Smarter Safety and Training Platform
How I helped design and build a platform that turns real-world environments, training workflows, and operational data into structured safety intelligence.
Safety and training systems tend to have the same fundamental problem: the data exists, but it's scattered, unstructured, and disconnected from the workflows that need it most. At First Pro, I worked across a suite of interconnected products designed to solve that problem — each tackling a different part of how fire departments capture, organize, and act on operational information.
It's worth being specific about what I built, because these are three distinct products that serve different purposes and different users.
The Three Products
First Pro Training App — Cross-Platform Microscenario Training
The First Pro training app is a cross-platform mobile application built for firefighter training. What makes it different from generic training tools is that it generates microscenarios customized to a department's actual operational data — call history, incident reports, and standard operating guidelines (SOGs). Instead of presenting static, one-size-fits-all training content, it builds scenarios from what a department's crews actually face in the field.
My work on this product included building and designing the cross-platform mobile experience, creating UI patterns for scenario delivery and progression, and contributing to the data architecture that connects department-specific inputs to training output.
Safemark Walkthrough — Pre-Plan PWA
Safemark Walkthrough is a progressive web app (PWA) for conducting structured building pre-plan walkthroughs. A crew uses it on-site to capture hazards, utilities, occupancy details, access points, and other safety-relevant environmental features. When the walkthrough is complete, the app generates structured planning documents from that captured data.
This is the product publicly available at FreeSafemark.com. My work here focused on the web-based walkthrough workflow, the structured data capture experience, and the document generation pipeline.
Safemark Capture — iOS Spatial Capture App (In Development)
The third product is a native iOS app that takes building capture much further. Rather than guided form-based input, it uses Apple's RoomKit framework and spatial geometry APIs to capture the actual physical geometry of interior spaces — producing structured spatial data from real environments, not just photos or annotated notes.
This app is still in active development and has not yet been publicly released. The spatial capture and environmental modeling work described in this post refers specifically to this product, not to the Safemark Walkthrough PWA.
The Challenge
Across all three products, the underlying problem is the same: fire departments operate with critical knowledge that lives in people's heads, paper documents, and disconnected systems. Training can be generic and disconnected from real conditions. Building information is hard to capture in a reusable way. And the data that does get collected often can't feed anything downstream.
Each of these products addresses a different layer of that problem — training intelligence, structured field capture, and spatial environmental modeling — with the long-term goal of connecting them into a cohesive platform.
My Role
My work expanded beyond front-end development into product architecture, workflow design, and systems thinking across all three products. That included:
- Designing cross-platform mobile interfaces for the First Pro training app
- Building and refining the walkthrough and document generation workflows in the Safemark PWA
- Contributing to the iOS spatial capture experience and the data models behind it
- Working with Cloudflare Workers for backend processing and event-driven orchestration
- Designing data transformation pipelines to normalize captured inputs for downstream use
- Debugging complex, intermittent issues across environments that were difficult to reproduce and isolate
- Helping shape the AI-assisted direction of the platform — thinking through how structured data from walkthroughs and spatial capture could eventually drive smarter training recommendations and scenario generation
Results & Impact
My work at First Pro helped move all three products toward a more capable and scalable foundation:
- The First Pro training app has a clearer architecture for connecting department operational data to customized scenario delivery
- The Safemark Walkthrough PWA is live and usable, with a structured capture-to-document workflow
- The iOS capture app has a foundation for spatial geometry-based data collection that goes well beyond what a form-based walkthrough can do
- Early groundwork is in place for AI-assisted features that could connect all three products over time
This project reflects the kind of work I find most rewarding: building systems that are technically thoughtful, user-centered, and tied to meaningful real-world problems — where the job is not just writing good code, but being responsible for how data is captured, how users experience the product, and how the platform can grow over time.
